How to Redact a PDF Without Uploading It (Free)
To redact a PDF without uploading it, open Redact PDF, choose your file, and let it find emails, phone numbers, card numbers and other personal details. Untick anything you want to keep, then download. The whole job runs inside your browser, so the document never reaches our servers.
That last part matters. You are redacting because the file is sensitive. Sending it to a website first, just to hide the sensitive parts, defeats the point.
Steps
- Open Redact PDF and choose your PDF.
- Wait a moment while it scans the text. It looks for email addresses, phone numbers, card numbers, IBAN and account numbers, and ID numbers by default.
- Tick extra types if you need them, such as dates or amounts of money.
- Type any names or words of your own into the box, separated by commas. For example:
Jane Doe, Project Falcon. - Check the list of matches. Each one shows the page it is on. Untick anything that should stay visible.
- Download the redacted PDF.
Is the text really gone?
Yes. A common mistake is drawing a black box over text. The box hides it on screen, but anyone can still select the text underneath, copy it, and paste it somewhere else.
This tool does it properly. Every page that has a redaction is rebuilt as an image with the black boxes burned in, and the document's hidden information (such as author and title) is cleared. Pages without redactions are left as they are, so they stay sharp and searchable.
You can check it yourself. Open the downloaded file, try to select the blacked-out area, and copy it. Nothing comes out.
What it finds automatically
- Email addresses, like name@example.com
- Phone numbers, including international formats such as +44 20 7946 0958
- Card numbers with 13 to 19 digits, with or without spaces
- IBAN and account numbers
- ID numbers, including US Social Security, Pakistani CNIC and UK National Insurance formats
- Dates and amounts of money, if you tick them
Names are harder to detect reliably, so add them yourself in the words box. It matches every place the name appears, in any capitalisation.
When redaction is worth doing
- Sharing a bank statement to prove income, without showing every transaction partner.
- Sending a contract or invoice to someone who does not need the other party's details.
- Publishing a document that mentions staff, customers or patients.
- Sending ID or visa paperwork where only part of the page is needed.

Questions
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser, including Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Very long documents are faster on a laptop.
Can I undo a redaction?
Not in the downloaded file, and that is the point. Keep your original PDF if you might need the full version later.
Why did it miss something?
Usually because that part of the page is an image, not text. Run OCR PDF first, then redact. You can also type the exact word or number into the custom words box.
Is it free?
